In the Spring of 1970, I was elected to be the first woman Student Body President of NCState, campaigning on a reputation built on Letters to the Editor of the student newspaper, the Technician.

Much like today, this was a time of great turmoil on campuses (Cambodia, Jackson State, Kent State, Vietnam War), and within days of my election, I, along with other area student leaders, marched at the head of a huge protest rally to the NC State Capitol. I was free to do all this with no fear of retribution.

55 years later, current events are strongly reminding of those days and I sadly know I am much less free now.

I hope the students at your lecture truly listened to your words, for if our democracy survives this Trump fascist movement, it will fall to them to rebuild our beloved nation "...with Liberty and Justice for all."

Excellent talk. I thought the point about Republican elected officials being less free was especially good.
