This was crucially important and sad news for someone who has not followed the ins-and-outs of ongoing corruption in Ukraine, and was assuming its president had been out there impeccably and virtuously leading his country as they hold the frontline for truth, justice and democracy on behalf of the whole world. The contrast with America seemed so perfect. Color me disillusioned, and obviously, uninformed.
The encouraging part is the quick and furious response of citizens, many young, in 17 cities. Good points in this pod: youth turned out in great numbers to register outrage over an issue would probably be inscruitible or of no interest to the average American voter. Young people have been scarce at American rallies this year. It seems, in Ukraine, as you point out, corruption still reads as a bad thing, not as the fine art of the deal.
A constant reminder that people are responsible for acting to protect freedom and must never invest unquestioning trust in leaders, no matter how heroic the are or seem to be.
