Read as a 15 year old, Holden was a hero.

Read as a 22 year old, Holden was a scared, self-deluded, and immature adolescent.

Which is to say,

it was a great book.

Yes, he was. But I can still cut him some slack. Growing up in a New Yorker story is pretty tough neighborhood. See Igby Goes Down and almost anything by Wes Anderson for details.

Sorry to be so abrupt about shooting down the totalitarian Tokugawa. I just didn’t want to take too much time away from everyone. On paper, the laws make it look as if the Tokugawa shogunate dictated everything, at least for the 25% of Japan they controlled. It’s just that there is a world of difference between making a law and enforcing it, or even the will to enforce it, which could vary from shogun to shogun. And then there’s the 75% over which the shogun had influence rather than jurisdiction. Although it’s complicated.
