reading a book, listening to a podcast, meditating:

- focused, sustained attention

- requires intention

- alpha and theta waves

- slow rhythms linked to focused attention, memory consolidation, and internal processing

- depth

browsing the internet:

- “mindless”

- follows spontaneous interest

- beta and gamma waves

- desynchronized, high‑frequency states tied to alertness and rapid stimulus processing

- breadth

neuroscience shows the brain benefits from cycling through all states.

just as your child’s behavior (playing loudly, quietly etc.) informs you of her needs, the activities you gravitate towards reveal your own needs.

beyond the brain flossing, it also served as generative material.
