Back in my early engineering career, I worked designing optical CCD scanners for large format documents. Industrial machines rather than the consumer level devices available at orders of magnitude less money.
This exposed us mechanical, electrical and software engineers to a wide swath of the graphics industry. This was early 1990’s. Photoshop was in its infancy and not yet absorbed by Adobe. PCs were slow and UNIX was our little slice of heaven and hell.
One afternoon while bored a couple of us had found a shareware morphing routine. We used it to morph a cartoon clown we had created with solid modeling and shaded into a solid model of a digital camera I’d designed.

It was pretty weird but worked in a crude way.
